Your corporate tax TRN and your VAT TRN are not the same number. Each comes from a separate registration with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA), even though both sit under the same EmaraTax profile. The two numbers often look almost identical, which is exactly why businesses mix them up. This guide explains the difference, where to find each number, how TRN verification works, and where the newer 10-digit TIN fits in.
The short answer
VAT TRN | Corporate tax TRN | |
|---|---|---|
Comes from | VAT registration | Corporate tax registration |
Who has one | Businesses above the VAT threshold, or registered voluntarily | Virtually every UAE company, plus individuals with business turnover above AED 1 million |
Length | 15 digits | 15 digits |
Used for | Tax invoices, VAT returns, input VAT recovery | Corporate tax returns, payments and FTA correspondence |
Printed on invoices | Yes, required on VAT tax invoices | No |
Public verification | FTA's TRN verification service | Ask the business for its corporate tax registration certificate |
Certificate | VAT registration certificate | Corporate tax registration certificate |
A business can have both numbers, only one of them, or, in limited cases, neither.
Is the corporate tax TRN the same as the VAT TRN?
No. Being registered for VAT doesn't register you for corporate tax, and your VAT number can't be used on a corporate tax return. The confusion comes from three things:
- Both are called a "TRN". People use "TRN" for any FTA tax number, so a bank form asking for your "TRN" doesn't say which tax it means.
- Both are 15 digits and can look very similar. For some businesses the two numbers share most of their digits, so a quick glance isn't enough to tell them apart.
- Both appear in the same EmaraTax account. Your taxable person profile holds both registrations, each with its own tile.
The safe habit is to always check which tax the number belongs to before you write it on a form.
Where to find each number
Where to look | VAT TRN | Corporate tax TRN |
|---|---|---|
Certificate | VAT registration certificate | Corporate tax registration certificate |
EmaraTax | VAT tile on your dashboard | Corporate Tax tile on your dashboard |
FTA emails | VAT registration approval | Corporate tax registration approval |
Your own documents | Every tax invoice you issue | Your corporate tax returns |
If you can't find a corporate tax number anywhere, you may not be registered. Corporate tax registration is mandatory for most businesses and has a deadline. See our corporate tax registration in Dubai service.
Where the 10-digit TIN fits in
With the UAE's move to electronic invoicing, EmaraTax now also shows a 10-digit Tax Identification Number (TIN). It's used to build your business's electronic invoicing address. It is a third identifier: it doesn't replace your VAT TRN on tax invoices or your corporate tax number on returns. When a system or customer asks for a "tax number", confirm whether they mean the TIN, the VAT TRN or the corporate tax number.
How to check a TRN number in the UAE
TRN verification is mainly used to confirm a supplier's VAT number before you claim input VAT on their invoice.
- Open the FTA's TRN Verification service.
- Enter the 15-digit TRN exactly as it appears on the invoice.
- Complete the security check and submit.
- Confirm that the business name returned matches the supplier on the invoice.
Quick format check: a UAE TRN is 15 digits with no letters. Anything shorter, longer or containing letters isn't a valid TRN.
Can I verify someone's corporate tax registration?
The public verification service is built for VAT TRNs. To confirm that a business is registered for corporate tax, for example during supplier onboarding or due diligence, ask for a copy of its corporate tax registration certificate. Make sure the legal name matches its trade licence.
Common TRN mix-ups and what they cause
Mix-up | What happens |
|---|---|
VAT TRN given on a bank or audit form that asks for the corporate tax number | KYC queries and delays |
Assuming VAT registration covers corporate tax | No corporate tax registration and the AED 10,000 late registration penalty |
Corporate tax number printed on tax invoices | Invoices that don't meet VAT invoice requirements |
Deregistering from VAT and assuming corporate tax ends too | A corporate tax registration still open, with returns still due |
Updating company details on VAT only | Corporate tax record out of date, with a possible penalty for not updating it within 20 business days |
That last one is common. Each registration has to be amended separately. See how to amend your corporate tax registration.
