Doctors have two realistic paths to a UAE Golden Visa, and which one fits depends on your salary and how your professional standing is best evidenced. This guide covers route selection, the DHA/MOH licensing requirement, and the degree attestation process that trips up more overseas-qualified doctors than any other single step.
Two Routes, and How to Tell Which One Fits
Doctors qualify under either the exceptional-talent category (10 years, requires a valid UAE health authority licence and, in most cases, recognised standing in your specialty) or the skilled-professional route (10 years, requires a basic monthly salary of AED 30,000 or more under a MOHRE Level 1 or 2 classification). If your salary already clears AED 30,000 a month, the skilled-professional route is generally the more straightforward application, since it doesn’t require gathering separate specialty-recognition evidence. Doctors below that salary threshold — common in early-career roles or certain public-sector positions — route through exceptional talent instead.
UAE Medical Licence: The Non-Negotiable First Step
Before any Golden Visa application, your UAE medical practising licence needs to be active and current — issued by DHA (Dubai), MOH (other emirates), or DHCC depending on your practice location. If you’re newly arriving and haven’t transferred your licence yet, this needs to happen first; a Golden Visa application cannot proceed on a pending or provisional licence.
Licence transfer for overseas-qualified doctors typically involves primary source verification of your original medical degree, a DataFlow or equivalent credential verification report, the relevant authority’s licensing exam where your specialty and country of qualification require one, and final licence issuance. This process runs independently of the Golden Visa application and should be completed well in advance, not started alongside it.
Degree Attestation: Where Timelines Actually Slip
Overseas medical degrees require 3-stage attestation before UAE authorities accept them: attestation by your home country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or equivalent, attestation by the UAE embassy in that country, and final attestation by the UAE Ministry of Education. This commonly takes 4-8 weeks, but medical degrees specifically can run longer than other fields, since some countries route medical qualifications through an additional professional-body verification step before ministry attestation is even possible. Start this process as early as you can — it is consistently the longest lead-time item in a doctor’s Golden Visa file.
Private Practice and Clinic Ownership
Doctors in private practice or clinic ownership are not excluded from either route. What matters is your active, valid medical licence and demonstrated professional standing — not whether you’re hospital-employed, in private practice, or running your own clinic. Clinic owners should also check whether their practice’s capital or revenue independently qualifies them under the business-investor Golden Visa routes, which can sometimes offer a faster path than the professional routes above.

- Current DHA, MOH, or DHCC medical practising licence
- Attested medical degree and any specialty board certifications
- For the salary route: a MOHRE-registered labour contract showing AED 30,000+ basic monthly salary, plus 6 months of bank statements
- For the exceptional-talent route: evidence of specialty standing — publications, board certifications, hospital appointment letters, or professional body membership, as applicable
- Emirates ID application and valid UAE health insurance
