Neither is better in general. The Golden Visa is the higher-bar, longer visa, usually 10 years, with AED 2 million of investment or AED 30,000 in basic salary. The Green Visa is the more accessible 5-year option, with AED 15,000 in basic salary, AED 360,000 of freelancer income or AED 1 million of business equity. If you qualify for both, the Golden Visa gives more time and broader family rights. If you meet only the Green thresholds, it is the practical route.

The Green Visa Routes in Detail
- Skilled employee: a valid UAE employment contract in a MoHRE level 1 to 3 occupation, at least a bachelor's degree, and a basic salary of AED 15,000 a month. A higher total package does not help if basic pay is below the line.
- Freelancer or self-employed: a MoHRE freelance or self-employment permit, a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, and income evidence of AED 360,000 or proof of financial solvency.
- Investor or partner: a stake of at least AED 1 million in a licensed UAE business, according to several guides.
Which Fits Which Profile
| Profile | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Employee on AED 18,000 basic | Green Visa |
| Employee on AED 35,000 basic in a qualifying role | Golden Visa, with the Green Visa as a fallback |
| Freelancer with two years of AED 360,000 income | Green Visa |
| Investor with AED 2.5 million | Golden Visa |
| Business owner with AED 1.2 million of equity | Green Visa, with a route to Golden later |
Cost and Work Rights
Both visas are self-sponsored and let you work. Our guide to working on an investor visa explains how the Green Visa allows work for any employer under a MoHRE permit. For scale, the DLD's published government fee for the Golden Visa property route is AED 9,884.75 for the main applicant, while one guide reports about AED 4,000 to AED 6,000 all-in for a single skilled-employee Green Visa before insurance. Confirm current fees, which our Golden Visa cost guide covers.
Who Should Choose Which
- Earning AED 15,000 to AED 30,000 a month: the Green Visa is your long-term route. Above AED 30,000 in basic pay, compare it with the ten-year route in our Golden Visa salary guide.
- Freelancing: the Green Visa fits if your income clears the threshold. Our guides to a freelance licence and the difference between a freelance visa and a freelance licence cover the set-up.
- Investing AED 1 million to AED 2 million in a business: the Green Visa investor route fits, while AED 2 million opens the Golden Visa. See our guide to the investor visa versus the Golden Visa.
- Investing AED 2 million or more, or having recognised talent: the Golden Visa fits, as covered in our guide to a Golden Visa without a job offer.
Where Sources Disagree
- Freelancer income. Most guides say AED 360,000 a year for the previous two years, one describes AED 360,000 over two years, and several allow proof of financial solvency instead. Check the current ICP wording.
- Time abroad on the Green Visa. The government portal lists Green Residence as exempt from the six-month rule, while some 2026 guides say the visa is cancelled after six months abroad. Get written confirmation before a long absence.
- Family. Golden Visa rules on adult sons and parents, and Green Visa limits on sons and parents, are reported differently across guides.
Our guide to losing a Golden Visa covers the Golden Visa side of the absence question.
Moving Between the Two
Holders can move between the routes over time. A Green Visa holder who later crosses the Golden thresholds applies for the Golden Visa as a new application. One guide says a Golden Visa investor whose basis falls below AED 2 million can move to the Green Visa instead of losing residency, so ask about this before you let a basis lapse.
