Setting up a company is one of the most common ways to get UAE residency without an employer. As a shareholder, your company sponsors your own residence visa, you get an Emirates ID, and you can then sponsor your family. This guide explains how UAE residency via company works, which company to set up if residency is your main goal, how many visas you can get, and what the whole process costs and how long it takes.
Quick answer: To get UAE residency through company formation, set up a free zone or mainland company, get its establishment card, then apply for a 2-year investor (partner) visa as a shareholder. A free zone company with one visa starts from AED 10,800 at Takween, and the whole process usually takes 2-4 weeks. Offshore companies cannot sponsor visas. For the visa itself in detail, see our investor visa in Dubai guide.
How UAE Residency via Company Works
UAE residency by company formation rests on one rule: a company licensed in a free zone or on the mainland can sponsor residence visas, and its owners are eligible for one. The chain is always the same:
- Trade licence - the company is formed.
- Establishment card - registers the company with immigration so it can sponsor visas.
- Entry permit - lets you enter or change status inside the UAE.
- Medical test and Emirates ID biometrics - done in person in the UAE.
- Residence visa - usually valid for 2 years and renewable while the company stays active.
The visa is linked to the company. If the trade licence lapses, the visa cannot be renewed, so the company has to be kept in good standing for as long as you want the residency.
Which Company Gives You Residency? Free Zone vs Mainland vs Offshore
Company type | Residence visa for owner? | Best for | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
Free zone company | Yes | Founders who mainly want residency and serve clients abroad or online | Visa quota depends on office type |
Mainland company | Yes | Founders who will trade with UAE customers | Needs an Ejari office; higher cost |
Offshore company | No | Holding assets and international trade | Cannot sponsor any residence visa |
For most people whose main goal is residency, a free zone company setup with residence visa is the fastest and cheapest route: no physical office is needed, and many free zones bundle the licence, a flexi-desk and one visa into one package. Choose the mainland if the business will sell to UAE customers. See free zone company setup and mainland company setup for the options.
How to Get Residency in Dubai by Starting a Company: Step by Step
Here is how to get residency in Dubai by starting a company, from first decision to Emirates ID:
- Choose your activity and jurisdiction. Pick a package that includes at least as many visas as people you want to sponsor in the first year.
- Submit documents and get the licence. Passport copies are the core; see our documents required for business setup checklist. A free zone licence takes 3-5 working days, a mainland licence 7-15.
- Get the establishment card. This registers the company with immigration.
- Apply for the entry permit. If you are already in the UAE on another visa, you change status instead of leaving the country.
- Take the medical test and give Emirates ID biometrics. You must be in the UAE for this step. Health insurance is required in Dubai.
- Receive your residence visa and Emirates ID. You can now open a personal bank account, rent a home and sponsor family.
Steps 1-3 can be done from abroad. You only need to travel for steps 5 and 6.
How Long Does It Take to Get Residency Through Company Formation?
With documents ready, it usually takes 2-4 weeks to get residency through a free zone company and 3-6 weeks through a mainland company:
Stage | Free zone | Mainland |
|---|---|---|
Trade licence | 3-5 working days | 7-15 working days |
Establishment card | A few working days | A few working days |
Entry permit, medical, Emirates ID and visa | 7-15 working days | 7-15 working days |
Typical total | 2-4 weeks | 3-6 weeks |
Delays usually come from unattested corporate documents, activities that need extra approval, or waiting for a medical appointment.
Cost of UAE Residency Through Company Formation
The cost of UAE residency through company formation has two parts: the company and the visa. Takween Advisory's published packages give a realistic starting point:
Option | Starting price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
Free zone company + 1 visa | AED 10,800 | Licence and one residence visa |
Free zone company + 2 visas | AED 17,181 | Licence and two residence visas |
Mainland company | AED 14,000 | Licence only; visas and office extra |
On top of the package, budget for health insurance, the Ejari office for a mainland company, and the annual renewal of both the licence and, every two years, the visa. Each extra visa usually adds about AED 4,000-7,000. See our pricing page for what each package includes.
How Many Visas Can a Company Get in Dubai?
How many visas a company can get in Dubai depends on its jurisdiction and office space. The investor or partner visa for an owner normally uses one slot of the quota.
Visa Quota for a Free Zone Company in Dubai
The visa quota for a free zone company in Dubai is set by the free zone and linked to the office you lease:
- Flexi-desk: usually 1-3 visas; most zones allow 2-3.
- Shared or small office: a few more, depending on the zone.
- Physical office: often around one visa per 9 square metres, as in DMCC.
Mainland Visa Quota
On the mainland, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) sets the quota. A new company starts with a small quota that grows with its office space and business activity, and it can apply for more as it hires. Dependent visas for your family do not use the company's quota.
Residence Visa for Company Owner in Dubai: Who Qualifies
A residence visa for a company owner in Dubai is issued to shareholders of the company. If a company has two or more owners, each shareholder applies for their own partner visa. A manager who is not a shareholder can be sponsored on an employment visa instead.
If you invest more, the 10-year Golden Visa may be an option: the business route needs paid-up capital of at least AED 2 million. See UAE Golden Visa services.
Sponsoring Your Family
Once your residence visa is issued, you can sponsor your spouse and children. You will generally need to show a monthly income of around AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus housing, and a tenancy contract. Sponsoring parents has a much higher income requirement. Family visas do not count toward the company's quota.
Company Formation vs Other Ways to Get UAE Residency
Route | Who it suits | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
Company formation | Founders, consultants, investors | Keep the company licensed and active |
Employment visa | People hired by a UAE employer | Tied to the job |
Freelance permit | Individual freelancers in approved sectors | Limited activities; one person |
Property investor visa | Property owners | Property value and ownership rules |
Golden Visa | Larger investors and specialists | e.g. AED 2 million business capital or property |
Company formation is the most flexible of these: you control the sponsor, you can work for your own clients, and the same company can later sponsor employees and your family.
Keeping Your Residency: Renewals and Rules
- Renew the trade licence every year. The visa cannot be renewed on an expired licence.
- Renew the visa before it expires. Overstay fines apply after the grace period.
- Do not stay outside the UAE for more than 6 months in a row on a standard residence visa, or it can lapse. Golden Visa holders are exempt.
- Keep the company compliant - corporate tax registration and returns, VAT if you pass the threshold, and up-to-date UBO records.
Common Mistakes
- Setting up an offshore company for residency - it cannot sponsor a visa.
- Buying a no-visa package, then paying more to add the visa later.
- Choosing a flexi-desk with too few visas for your partner, family plans or first hire.
- Letting the licence lapse, which blocks the visa renewal and adds fines.
- Booking flights before the entry permit is issued.
