Second Citizenship by Investment for Myanmar Citizens

Myanmar does not appear on the formal banned or restricted nationality list of any of the five established Caribbean citizenship by investment programs. Demand from Myanmar nationals has risen since the 2021 military coup, driven further by the conscription law introduced in February 2024 and the devastating earthquake of March 2025, though none of these events change the country's formal eligibility status with Caribbean programs.

Takween Advisory gives Myanmar nationals a realistic, upfront assessment before any time or money is committed, including honest guidance on the currency controls and passport restrictions the junta has introduced, both of which affect how an application is actually funded and processed far more than any Caribbean program's own eligibility rules.

Who Needs a Second Citizenship as a Myanmar National?

We see a consistent set of profiles among Myanmar clients, shaped by the ongoing civil war, the 2024 conscription law, and the country's currency controls:

Business Owners Protecting Continuity

Myanmar entrepreneurs with operations or capital outside the country are seeking a citizenship that gives their business and family a stable legal footing independent of the junta's currency controls and the ongoing conflict.

Families Affected by the 2024 Conscription Law

Since Myanmar introduced compulsory military service for men aged 18 to 35 and women aged 18 to 27 in February 2024, a significant number of families already outside the country have looked at a second citizenship as part of a broader plan for long-term stability.

Households Rebuilding After the 2025 Earthquake

The earthquake that struck central Myanmar in March 2025 caused an estimated USD 10.97 billion in damage, equivalent to roughly 14 percent of the country's GDP. Families whose livelihoods were disrupted are increasingly looking abroad for longer-term stability.

High-Net-Worth Individuals Diversifying Risk

Investors and business owners who want a lawful, permanent alternative in place, independent of Myanmar's political and economic trajectory, make up a significant share of applicants across all five Caribbean programs.

Second Citizenship Process for Myanmar Applicants - Step by Step

The process follows the standard Caribbean citizenship by investment sequence, with additional attention to Myanmar's currency controls and current passport processing constraints.

Step 1: Program Selection

We review your budget, family composition, and objectives against all five Caribbean programs, since none formally restricts Myanmar nationals but eligibility conditions, cost, and processing time still vary by country.

Step 2: Currency and Documentation Mapping

Before any application is filed, we map exactly how your qualifying investment will be funded and confirm that your Myanmar passport and supporting documents are valid and current, given the junta's tightened passport processing rules.

Step 3: Due Diligence Preparation

Background documentation, bank records, and supporting evidence are compiled and internally reviewed for the main applicant and every dependent aged 16 and above before submission.

Step 4: Submission Through an Authorised Representative

Every Caribbean program requires applications to be filed through a government-authorised local agent. We coordinate directly with your Authorised Representative to file the completed application with the relevant Citizenship by Investment Unit.

Step 5: Government Due Diligence and Interview

The government conducts its own background and source-of-funds checks, and a mandatory interview applies to the main applicant and dependents aged 16 or older on most programs, generally without needing to travel to the Caribbean.

Step 6: Approval, Investment, and Passport Issuance

Once approval in principle is granted, the qualifying investment is made, remaining government fees are settled, and the certificate of citizenship and passport are issued directly by the government.

Current Status by Program (2026)

None of the five established programs names Myanmar on a formal banned or restricted nationality list. This is the current position, which we reconfirm before every application:

ProgramStatus for Myanmar NationalsDetail
DominicaNo formal restrictionNot on the published exclusion or case-by-case list; standard due diligence applies
Antigua and BarbudaNo formal restrictionNot on the published restricted nationality list; standard due diligence applies
GrenadaNo formal restrictionNo published banned or restricted list; every application is assessed individually
St LuciaNo formal restrictionMyanmar is not on St Lucia's published exclusion list
St Kitts and NevisNo formal restrictionMyanmar does not appear on the SRO 27 of 2023 exclusion list

In short: no Caribbean program formally restricts Myanmar applicants. Every program still applies standard due diligence, and given the current situation in Myanmar, expect closer attention to source of funds and identity verification than for a more stable nationality.

Why Applications Still Receive Close Attention

It is worth being clear about what is, and is not, driving this scrutiny. Sanctions imposed by the US, UK, EU, Australia, and Canada since 2021 target the military junta, military-linked companies, and specific officials responsible for the coup and subsequent crackdown, not Myanmar nationality as a whole. The EU's Myanmar sanctions regime has been extended through April 2027 on this targeted basis. Caribbean program caution reflects standard anti-money-laundering risk assessment and the practical difficulty of verifying documents from a country in active civil conflict, rather than any nationality-based exclusion.

Myanmar's Passport and Travel Restrictions

Since the compulsory military service law took effect in February 2024, the junta has tightened control over who can leave Myanmar. Passport conversions were suspended at points during 2024, men have at times been barred from working abroad, and in March 2026 the junta introduced a new passport law mandating a transition to biometric e-passports linked to a digital identification system by 2027, which human rights organisations have criticised as a further tool for controlling international travel.

None of this changes your eligibility for a Caribbean program, but it does affect practical timelines. A valid, current Myanmar passport is still needed to apply and travel, and if yours has expired or needs renewal, we recommend confirming your ability to obtain or renew it before committing to an application. A second citizenship does not exempt Myanmar citizens from national service obligations while inside Myanmar, and we recommend addressing your status with the appropriate authorities directly if this applies to you, rather than assuming a foreign passport changes it.

Myanmar's Currency Controls

The Myanmar kyat has fallen by roughly 80 percent against the US dollar since the 2021 coup. The junta's Foreign Currency Management Law criminalises holding foreign currency without authorisation, and authorised banks are generally limited to selling no more than USD 500 to an individual travelling abroad. This makes funding a Caribbean citizenship application directly from money inside Myanmar considerably more complex than from most other countries.

As with other clients facing capital controls, we generally find it more straightforward when the qualifying investment is funded from income or assets already held outside Myanmar, including in the UAE or elsewhere in the GCC.

Documents Myanmar Applicants Typically Need

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months' remaining validity, plus a recent passport-size photograph
  • Birth certificate and, where applicable, marriage certificate, translated and attested where required
  • Police clearance certificates from Myanmar and every other country of residence over the past 10 years
  • Bank statements and supporting evidence for every source of the qualifying investment
  • UAE or GCC residence visa, salary certificate, or trade licence, where relevant to the source-of-funds picture
  • Medical certificate and, on most programs, a mandatory interview for the main applicant and dependents aged 16 or older

Foreign-issued documents generally require translation and attestation before submission. Our document attestation team handles this in parallel with the citizenship application to avoid delays.

Why Choose Takween Advisory for Myanmar Nationals Seeking Second Citizenship

Takween Advisory is a UAE-based business consultancy advising high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, and families across the GCC on citizenship by investment. We understand the practical realities Myanmar's currency controls, conscription law, and passport processing constraints have created, and we build every application around what will genuinely work given those constraints.

Every Caribbean program requires applications to be filed through a government-authorised local agent - we work alongside your Authorised Representative to prepare a complete, accurate file and manage the process through to passport issuance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Myanmar does not appear on the restricted or banned nationality list of any of the five established Caribbean programs.
Not directly. Sanctions from the US, UK, EU, and others target the military junta, military-linked companies, and specific officials, not Myanmar nationality as a whole. As with any applicant, you will need to show you have no connection to a sanctioned individual or entity.
It is more complicated than funding from abroad, given the Foreign Currency Management Law and the roughly USD 500 limit on foreign currency purchases for individuals travelling abroad. Funds already held outside Myanmar are generally more straightforward to use.
No. A second citizenship does not exempt Myanmar citizens from national service obligations while inside Myanmar. This needs to be addressed directly with the relevant Myanmar authorities.
You will need a valid passport to travel and complete your application, and passport processing in Myanmar has faced delays and restrictions since 2024. We recommend confirming your ability to renew or obtain a passport before committing to a citizenship application.
Dominica has the lowest headline entry cost among the five established programs, starting at US$200,000 for a family of up to four.
Yes. Most programs include a spouse and dependent children on the base contribution, and several allow parents, grandparents, and unmarried siblings to be added for an additional fee.
No. None of the five Caribbean programs require renouncing your existing citizenship.
Yes. You do not need to be resident in Myanmar to apply, and applying from the UAE is common among our Myanmar clients, many of whom already have income, assets, or business interests based in the region.
