To check a TRN number in the UAE, go to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) website, open the TRN verification tool, enter the 15-digit number and complete the security check. If the TRN is valid, the tool shows the name of the business it belongs to. It is free, it takes about a minute, and you do not need an account.
That one check protects you more than most people realise. If you pay VAT to a supplier whose TRN is wrong or not registered, you may not be able to reclaim that VAT, and you could be paying tax that never reaches the FTA. Below is how to run the check, how to find your own TRN, and what to do when the result does not match the invoice.
What Is a TRN Number in the UAE?
A Tax Registration Number (TRN) is the 15-digit number the FTA gives a business when it registers for VAT. It works like an ID for tax purposes: it must appear on every tax invoice and credit note the business issues, and on its VAT returns.
Your VAT TRN is not the same as a corporate tax registration, and it is not your trade licence number. If you have both VAT and corporate tax, our guide to the corporate tax TRN vs the VAT TRN explains the difference.
How to Verify a TRN Number in the UAE, Step by Step
FTA TRN verification is the official way to check, and it works the same way for every emirate, so TRN verification in Dubai is no different. Here is how to use it:
| Step | What you do | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open the Federal Tax Authority website, tax.gov.ae | The FTA home page |
| 2 | Click the TRN verification option | A search box for the TRN |
| 3 | Type the full 15-digit TRN, with no spaces or letters | The number in the box |
| 4 | Complete the security check (captcha) and search | The result |
| 5 | Compare the business name shown with the invoice and trade licence | A match, or a reason to ask questions |
If the number is valid, the tool returns the registered business name. If it says the TRN is not found, check you typed it correctly before you assume anything; a single wrong digit gives the same result as a fake number.
Can I Use EmaraTax for TRN Verification?
Yes. If you have an EmaraTax account, you can also verify a TRN after logging in. For a quick one-off check, the public tool on the FTA website is faster because it needs no login.
How to Check if a Company Is VAT Registered in the UAE
The TRN check is how you confirm a company is VAT registered. Run it in these situations:
- A new supplier sends their first tax invoice. Check before you pay, not after.
- An invoice charges 5% VAT but shows no TRN. A tax invoice must show the supplier's TRN. Ask for a corrected invoice before you pay the VAT.
- The name on the invoice differs from the name on the result. It may be a trading name, or it may be the wrong company. Ask for their VAT certificate.
- A large or one-off purchase. The bigger the VAT amount, the more it matters if you cannot reclaim it.
Make it part of your supplier onboarding: one check per supplier, saved with their trade licence, avoids most problems at return time.
Where Can I Find My TRN Number?
If you need your own company's TRN, for an invoice, a bank or a client form, look in any of these places:
- Your VAT registration certificate. The TRN is printed on it.
- Your EmaraTax account. Log in and open your registered profile; you can also download the certificate again from there.
- A tax invoice your company issued. Your TRN should be on every one.
- A VAT return you filed. Each return shows the TRN it was filed under.
Lost your certificate? A VAT certificate download from EmaraTax gives you a fresh copy at any time. If you have not registered yet, see our VAT registration in the UAE service: we check whether you must register and take the application through to your TRN.
TRN Number Format in the UAE: How Many Digits?
A UAE TRN has exactly 15 digits, all numbers. Use the format as a quick first filter:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| 15 digits, numbers only | Correct format; now verify it on the FTA website |
| 14 or 16 digits | Wrong; ask the supplier to check their certificate |
| Letters or symbols in the number | Not a valid TRN |
| A trade licence number instead | Not a TRN; ask for the VAT certificate |
Format alone does not prove anything. A made-up 15-digit number looks correct, which is exactly why the online check matters.
What to Do If a TRN Is Not Valid or Looks Fake
A failed check does not always mean a fake TRN number. Often it is a typo, an old number, or a supplier quoting a sister company's TRN. Work through it in this order:
- Re-enter the number carefully. Copy it from the invoice digit by digit.
- Ask the supplier for their VAT certificate. A registered business can send it in minutes.
- Do not pay the VAT part until it is resolved. You can pay the net amount and hold the VAT until you have a valid tax invoice.
- Keep a record. Save the invoice, your check result and the supplier's reply.
- Report it if it is clearly fake. A business charging VAT without being registered can be reported to the FTA.
Charging VAT without a valid registration, or claiming VAT on invoices that do not meet the rules, can lead to FTA penalties. Our guide to UAE VAT penalties lists them.
Why a TRN Check Matters When You File Your VAT Return
When you file your VAT return, you reclaim the VAT you paid on business costs. That claim depends on having valid tax invoices from registered suppliers. A wrong or missing TRN can mean the FTA rejects that part of your claim, which only shows up later, when it is harder to fix.
Our VAT return filing team checks supplier invoices and TRNs as part of every return we prepare, so problems are caught before the return goes in.
