How to Extend a UAE Tourist Visa Without Leaving the Country

Yes, most UAE tourist and visit visas can be extended from inside the country — no visa run, no flight out and back in. The process runs through GDRFA if your visa was issued in Dubai, or ICP if it was issued anywhere else in the UAE, and for most categories it can be completed entirely online before your current visa expires. The two things that trip people up are the real cost, which is usually higher than the headline figure quoted online, and the fact that since February 2026 there is no grace period at all once the visa lapses.

GDRFA or ICP: Which One Handles Your Extension

• Dubai-issued visa — GDRFA. Apply through the GDRFA Dubai app, the GDRFA smart services portal, or an Amer Centre in person.
• Visa issued anywhere else in the UAE — ICP. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah all route through the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) Smart Services portal or app.

Check which authority issued your entry permit before you start — applying through the wrong portal is one of the most common reasons an extension gets delayed.

Which Visas Can Actually Be Extended In-Country

Not every entry permit qualifies, and this is where most of the confusion online comes from — several visa types get bundled together under “tourist visa” when their extension rules differ.

The 90-day on-arrival visa is the exception most guides skip. If you entered on that category, there is currently no in-country extension route — leaving and re-entering is the only way to extend your stay. Everyone else in the table above can apply without leaving, provided the application goes in before the current visa expires.

All UAE tourist and visit visa stays are also bound by an overarching 180-day cap within a rolling 365-day period. Even if your specific visa category technically allows further extension, you cannot exceed that annual ceiling.

What the Extension Actually Costs

This is the part most articles get wrong by omission. The headline figure quoted almost everywhere is AED 630, and it is real — but it is only the base fee. GDRFA's own published fee schedule adds a further charge that applies specifically when the applicant is already inside the country, which describes almost everyone reading this article.

ICP-administered emirates run a related but separately structured fee list — a general application fee of AED 100, plus category-specific charges, plus the same AED 50-a-day figure for any period already overstayed. Fees on both sides are revised periodically without much notice, so treat every number here as indicative and check the current rate on the GDRFA or ICP portal before you pay.

How to Apply, Step by Step

1. Confirm your visa category and issuing authority — GDRFA for Dubai, ICP for the other six emirates — and check it appears in the eligibility table above.
2. Check your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining from your intended exit date. Extensions are commonly held up or refused over this alone.
3. Log in to the relevant portal — the GDRFA Dubai app or website, or the ICP Smart Services portal — using UAE Pass or a registered account.
4. Submit the application before your current visa expires. Since 11 February 2026 there is no buffer: an application filed even one day after expiry is processed as a fresh visa application with overstay fines attached, not as an extension.
5. Upload your passport copy and current visa details, and pay the fee online.
6. Receive confirmation, typically within 48 to 72 hours once documents are accepted — the updated validity links electronically to your passport and is confirmed by SMS.

If You Miss the Deadline: Overstay Fines in 2026

Since 11 February 2026, UAE overstay penalties run at a flat AED 50 per day, from day one, with no grace period. This replaced the previous patchwork of different rates and buffer days across emirates and visa categories — the old system where a short grace period existed before fines kicked in no longer applies to tourist and visit visas.

• The fine accrues daily from the day after expiry, automatically flagged by the smart-gate systems at UAE airports and land borders.
• An exit permit fee of roughly AED 250 to 350 also applies on departure if fines are outstanding.
• Unpaid fines can trigger a departure ban and block future UAE visa applications, and in serious or repeated cases can lead to deportation.
• Settle fines before travelling through the ICP Smart Services portal, the GDRFA Dubai portal, or UAE Pass — ideally at least 48 hours before your flight, so the system has time to clear the block.

If your visa has already expired, do not assume the extension process still applies. Applications submitted after expiry are treated as new visa applications, at full new-visa cost, on top of whatever overstay fine has already accrued for the lapsed days.

Common Reasons Extensions Get Delayed or Refused

• Applying through the wrong authority — GDRFA for an ICP-issued visa, or vice versa.
• Passport validity under 6 months from the intended exit date.
• Having already used both available extensions on a 30-day visa, or the one available extension on a 60-day visa — no third round exists without exiting.
• Applying after expiry, which converts the request into a fresh visa application rather than an extension.
• Repeated back-to-back extensions across multiple visas, which GDRFA and ICP can flag and refuse at their discretion — the in-country route is designed for a longer single stay, not an indefinite rolling residence.
• Exceeding the 180-day annual cap, regardless of how the individual extensions were structured.

If Your Plans Have Changed: Converting Rather Than Extending

An extension keeps you on the same visa type for longer.
