The 96-Hour Transit Visa: Who It Is For
This visa exists for exactly one situation: you have a connecting flight through a UAE airport and want to leave the airport during your layover, rather than staying in the international transit zone. It is not a general tourist visa and cannot be used to enter the UAE for any purpose unconnected to a genuine onward journey.
- You must be flying through on a UAE-based airline. Emirates, flydubai, Etihad and similar carriers sponsor the transit visa as part of your itinerary — it is arranged through the airline before travel, not applied for independently, and it is not available on arrival.
- You need a confirmed onward flight departing within the visa's window — 48 or 96 hours of arrival, depending on which you are issued.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.
- You must actually be exiting the airport. Passengers who stay airside in the international transit zone and never pass through immigration do not need this visa at all, regardless of layover length.
There is also a group who never need to apply: travellers from nationalities that already qualify for UAE visa-on-arrival or are visa-exempt do not need a separate transit visa — they simply enter on that basis if they choose to leave the airport.
48-Hour vs 96-Hour: Which One You Get
Your airline determines which duration applies based on your specific layover length — you do not choose between them freely, and a 48-hour visa cannot be upgraded to 96 hours after it has been issued. If your connection is long enough to warrant more time in the city, that has to be reflected in the visa arranged before you fly, not adjusted once you land.

Both durations carry an additional service or mediator fee charged by the airline handling the application on the government's behalf — GDRFA's own service listing notes the fee as “plus fees for the mediator service.” Budget for that airline handling charge on top of the AED 50 government fee, and confirm the exact figure with your specific carrier rather than assuming a flat number, since it is the airline's charge to set, not a fixed government fee.
Overstaying past the 48 or 96-hour window is treated the same as overstaying any other UAE visa: a daily fine applies from the day after the permitted period ends, with no grace period. Confirm the current rate with GDRFA or your airline before you travel, since overstay penalties across UAE visa categories were unified in February 2026 and are worth checking are current rather than assuming an older, category-specific figure still applies.
A Related but Different Route: Cruise Passenger Visas
Tourists arriving by cruise ship use a separate visa category rather than the transit visa described above, typically arranged through the cruise line as part of the itinerary. If you are arriving by sea rather than by connecting flight, the eligibility and application route differ from everything in this section — check directly with your cruise operator rather than assuming the transit visa rules apply.
The 5-Year Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa: Who Qualifies
This is a genuinely different product from anything above, and it was significantly relaunched on 15 July 2026 with the local-guarantor requirement removed entirely. It is aimed at frequent visitors — business travellers, investors, event organisers, and people with ongoing family or professional ties to the UAE who were previously stuck repeating short-term visit visa applications or relying on a corporate sponsor.
The eligibility test is short and entirely financial rather than professional or nationality-based:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months.
- One recent passport-style photograph.
- A minimum bank balance of roughly USD 4,000 (about AED 14,700), shown through a 6-month bank statement.
That third point is where most rejections happen. The balance has to be maintained consistently across the full 6-month statement period — not deposited shortly before you apply. A sudden large deposit close to the application date is a common and avoidable cause of refusal. The funds remain entirely yours; they are shown only as proof of means, not paid to any authority.
Unlike earlier, more restricted versions of this visa, the July 2026 relaunch is open to applicants of all nationalities, with no local sponsor, host or employer needed at any stage.
